MICHIGAN – A bipartisan coalition of Michigan legislators introduced a package of bills today that will take important steps to expand affordable housing for people all across our state.
Michigan is currently facing a severe shortage of 119,000 homes, and restrictive zoning laws are stalling the construction of more affordable homes and driving up costs. Recent polling by YouGov shows that 82% of voters agree that the state must take bold action to restore affordability, unlock housing choice, and promote more vibrant local economies.
“It is past time for our state to address the housing shortage that is affecting so many Michiganders,” said Lauren Strickland, Executive Director for Abundant Housing Michigan. “We want everyone to be able to live in a community of their choosing, where they can find a home that meets their needs and that they can afford. To make this a reality, we must allow more homes to be built across Michigan.”
The bipartisan housing package encompasses a wide range of tested policy interventions that can cut housing costs and ease the crisis for Michiganders by:
Allowing smaller homes on smaller lots so that more homes can be built in existing neighborhoods, near jobs, and closer to amenities.
Streamlining administrative processes to create predictability, reduce delays, and lower costs for builders.
Creating guardrails in decision-making to prevent a small minority of residents from vetoing projects that benefit the community.
Crucially, there is already strong bipartisan support for these solutions. According to YouGov, more than two-thirds of Michigan voters support proposals to allow smaller homes on smaller lots, and nearly 60% of voters find current local approval processes unfair.
Taken together, these proposals will allow desperately needed homes to be built and prevent more Michiganders from being priced out of their communities.
Abundant Housing Michigan is a statewide coalition working to ensure Michigan’s future is one of abundant housing, robust communities, and sustainable growth for every person who wants to belong here.
