Position Overview

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Executive Director to lead Abundant Housing Michigan, a startup 501c4 advocacy organization, in its mission to advance pro-housing policies. The Executive Director will be responsible for overseeing strategic initiatives, advocacy campaigns, fundraising efforts, and operational management. Specifically this role will focus on building a network of housing abundance supporters across Michigan and ensuring that this network is able to be politically effective at key moments of policy change. This role requires a visionary leader who is passionate about housing policy and experienced in nonprofit leadership and coalition-building, with legislative advocacy experience a plus.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Organizational Development

  • With board input,  execute the organization’s strategic vision and long-term growth plan.
  • Lead the organization’s advocacy efforts to shape pro-housing policy in Michigan.
  • Build and strengthen coalitions and partnerships with policymakers, nonprofit organizations, industry stakeholders, and grassroots advocates.
  • Ensure alignment of all programs and initiatives with the organization’s mission and goals.

Advocacy & Public Policy

  • Engage with state and local policymakers to promote housing affordability policies.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments affecting housing policy in Michigan.
  • Represent the organization in public forums, media interviews, and industry events.
  • Mobilize grassroots supporters and coalition partners to advance key legislative priorities.

Fundraising & Financial Management

  • Develop and execute fundraising strategies, including grant writing, donor engagement, and sponsorship development.
  • Working with the treasurer, managing the organization’s budget, ensuring financial sustainability and compliance with nonprofit regulations.

Operations & Team Management

  • Oversee day-to-day operations and manage a team of contractors and potential future staff hires.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive work culture that promotes professional growth.
  • Ensure compliance with legal and ethical standards for nonprofit management.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors, 

Qualifications

  • Passion for Housing Policy: Deep understanding of housing affordability challenges and policy solutions.
  • Leadership Experience: Some experience in nonprofit organizations and public policy advocacy. 2 years preferred. 
  • Advocacy & Policy Expertise: Experience working in or around legislative advocacy, government relations, or grassroots organizing.
  • Communication & Public Relations: Strong public speaking, writing, and media engagement skills.
  • Grant Writing and Fundraising: Experience writing competitive grants and building relationships with funders long-term. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with state-level advocacy organizations or coalitions.
  • Knowledge of Michigan’s political landscape and housing policies.
  • Organizational management experience. 
  • Background in urban planning, economics, public policy, or a related field.
